Another New Board of Veterans Affairs Appointee

Governor Scott Walker has appointed another member to fill the fourth and final current vacancy on the Wisconsin Board of Veterans Affairs, former State Representative John Townsend.

------------------------------

John Townsend of Fond du Lac, Wis.

6th Congressional District (Rep. Petri)

John Townsend (b. May 23, 1938) was a Republican member of the Wisconsin State Assembly, representing the 52nd District from 1999 through 2010 and a longtime, respected member of the Assembly veterans affairs committee.

Townsend’s most recent legislative committee assignments included the following:

2009-2010: Aging and Long-Term Care; Colleges and Universities; Education; Veterans and Military Affairs.

2007-2008: Small Business; Veterans and Military Affairs; Aging and Long Term Care (Chair); Consumer Protection and Personal Privacy; Education; Financial Institutions; Housing; Special Committee on Airport Authorities.

Prior to his election to the Legislature he served on the Fond du Lac City Council from 1992-1998.

Townsend has worked as a small business partner/corporate executive, and served in the United States Navy and U.S. Naval Reserves.

He is a member of American Legion Post #75, Fond du Lac Adult Literacy Advisory Board of the Fond du Lac Arts Council, Fond du Lac Visiting Nurses Association, VFW Post #1904, and Wisconsin Literacy.

Townsend’s Senate committee confirmation hearing has been added to the confirmation hearing of the other three new Board appointees next Tuesday morning, June 7, 2011.

If confirmed by the Senate, Townsend will serve the unexpired term, expiring May 1, 2013, that was vacated by former Board appointee Jackie Guthrie.

If AB 96/SB 97 is enacted, two additional Board seats will become available for appointments to the newly expanded Board.  Should the Governor be following the directive in the pending AB 96/SB 97 legislation to appoint Board members by Congressional district, he might then choose nominees from the remaining two Congressional Districts:

  • 3rd Congressional District (Rep. Kind): Western Wisconsin south to the Illinois border. Counties of: St. Croix, Dunn, Pierce, Pepin, Eau Claire, Clark, Buffalo, Trempeleau, Jackson, La Crosse, Monroe, Juneau, Vernon, Richland, parts of Sauk, Crawford, Grant, Iowa, Lafayette.
  • 4th Congressional District (Rep. Moore): Metro Milwaukee. Cities of: City of Milwaukee, West Milwaukee, St. Francis, Cudahy, South Milwaukee.
